Hastings Pier Fire 5.10.10, I will donate £5 per print sold.

09th October 2010
Although I now live in Bristol, I grew up in Hastings old town and spent many years playing on and around the glorious Victorian seafront pier. My Great Grandfather even helped build part of the pier in the twenties.

Words cannot say therefore how saddened and grieved I was to hear the news early on the morning of the 5th of this month that the pier had been subject to an arson attack in the middle of the night and that by dawn something like 95 percent of the structures on top of the supports had been destroyed.

The fire continued to burn most of Tuesday due to sea winds and the difficulty of controlling such a blaze from the beach and the sea. Suffice to say that even though neglect from the (absentee) owner had caused the pier to close four years earlier, the destruction of this historical structure has been a tragedy.

The Hastings Pier and White Rock Truct (HPWRT) had been battling valiantly to raise enough money to restore the pier prior to the fire (with Hastings Council finally agreeing to compulsary purchase it back), and now this task is even more important. It is still unknown how much of the main supports can be saved but it is hoped that with luck the body of the pier can be re-built and restored.

To this end I will be setting up a portfolio of shots taken of the pier or with the pier in the background and dontating £5 from every print sold to the HPWRT fundraising effort in the hope that we can bring our pier back to life.
Watch this space as I hope to set up the portfolio over the next two days.
